TikTok is a social media site I have spent way too much time on. It’s the only platform I can spend hours on without even realizing it. However, it’s safe to say that I’m not the only one who loves the app. In fact, millions of others are in the same boat as me. I can even say that I’m a victim of the TikTok shop and looking into products advertised on the site.  Naturally, that brings me to the question of why TikTok is so addictive to consumers?


One of the things that makes the app great for marketing is connected to its algorithm. TikTok generates its feed based on what users have shown interest in on their “For You” page. Each user’s feed looks different because we all like different things. This algorithm is created based on a few different factors. One of these factors is user interactions. So if you like a video or comment similar content will come up. They also take the video's information into consideration so if you like a particular sound or videos with the same captions it will update your feed. Lastly, user settings help in determining what comes up on your feed based on where you live and what language you prefer. 


When the app first came out I had no idea it would grow to the size it did. It went from being mainly younger generations to an even larger audience of all ages. With the combination of short engaging content, the option for longer videos, and an expanding variety of content and users TikTok has a lot of marketing benefits for businesses.  Some of these benefits include driving growth, meeting the next generation, and the unique engagement opportunities. If companies take advantage of the trends on the app and post consistently, TikTok is a great way to improve your business.
