Humans need connections with others in their life. It just so happens that the internet is one place where people go to do just that. But how has the internet evolved into being as addictive as it is today? After watching part of the movie “Social Dilemma” I can say that so far it has really turned on my marketing brain. Whenever I type something into Google or look at an Instagram post, I never think about being tracked. Well, apparently a lot of major tech companies are actually paying more attention than we may have thought.
I always knew that data about the content I was drawn to was being documented, but I didn’t understand to what extent. Even the smallest digital footprints are put into a database to not only show us the content we like but to increase our time on the platform. This could be something as simple as how long we view content even if there was no interaction. The goal is to create an addiction between the consumers and the big online platforms. My personal view on technology is that way too much time is spent using it. I think about the increased numbers of ADHD, depression, and anxiety in my generation and I have to stop and think about how technology has impacted that. What is the limit? Ethically, I don’t know how major tech companies could use manipulation tactics that cause more problems than just spending too much time online.
Obviously, these corporations have the same goals as many, to make a profit and retain consumers. I just wonder what will happen from the continued escalation of overusing these platforms and what can be done to combat the damage.
